Movember Rules, Should You Start With A Moustache Or A Clean Shave?

Trucker moustache

I have been a huge fan of Movember over the last couple of years, but I believe there is a much larger opportunity that is currently being missed.

What is Movember

Movember is an annual global event which occurs every November, where men change their appearance through growing a moustache for the 30 days of Movember. In doing so we become walking, talking billboards for men’s health. During this period men and women raise money which is then donated to men’s health programs around the world. The moustache is our ribbon – it’s our way of generating conversations, awareness and raising funds for men’s health.

The Rules

  1. Once signed up at each Mo Bro must begin the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face.
  2. For the entire month of Movember each mo bro must grow and groom a moustache
  3. Don’t fake it. No beards, no goatees, no fake moustaches
  4. Use the power of the moustache to create conversations about men’s health and to raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health
  5. Each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentlemen

These 5 rules set out how Mo Bro’s should conduct themselves during the month of November but not all of these rules are set-up to maximise the potential exposure. Although the first rule sets everybody off with the same starting point to which to grow your moustache, it also stops the visual impact of starting the month with a moustache in place. Starting the month of November with a clean shaven face, means that you cannot take advantage of the impact that could be made by cutting off all of your facial hair apart from your moustache. By having a moustache on day one you can instantly start talking about men’s health and what you are doing to help. Starting the month clean shaven reduces the initial impact, and you have to wait a week or so before the natural conversations start to occur.

Beard Sacrifice

As part of this years campaign, Movember UK released The Beard Sacrifice, a video showing a proud beard owner sacrificing his beard to leave a powerful moustache. This video shows how awesome (or ridiculous) you can look, if the moustache is left rather than being cut down to a clean shave. Think about the impact of seeing a connoisseur upon his lip on November first, compared to the clean shaven baby face. He would be instantly recognisable to other Mo Bro’s and Mo Sista’s, and any unknowing member of the public would be intrigued, possibly enough to start a conversion.

This leads onto the other promotional material produced by Movember, showing various styles of Moustache and how how much of an impact you can have by participating. All of the videos and imagery highlight men with various moustaches that even the hairiest of men would have a difficulty in growing in only 4 weeks. In most cases, men who start the month clean shaven will get to the end of the month, either sporting very little, or a Rat Tash which is near impossible to groom into any real style.

The Face of Men’s Health

Movember is about raising awareness and donating money to men’s health and one of the best ways to do that is by starting conversations. Being able to start with and continue to grow a moustache throughout November will increase the impact Movember has in the community during the early weeks of the month and will hopefully lead to a greater awareness and donations around the world.

If you are going to participate in Movember, will you be stating with a moustache, or will you follow the rules and start clean shaven?
